Why take a role?

Every Toastmasters meeting runs on a team of members, each with a role to play. Taking one is the fastest way to get the most from the club. You practise a real skill in a supportive room, and every role is a chance to learn something new. You don’t need to be an expert, and first-timers are always welcome to try one. If you’re not sure where to start, ask any committee member and we’ll help you pick a role that suits you.

The Roles

Toastmaster of the Evening (TME)

The TME is the host and director of the meeting. They introduce speakers, keep the flow smooth between segments, prepare the agenda, confirm roles with participants and set an enthusiastic, welcoming tone for the audience.

What you’ll learn: leadership, confident hosting, organisation and thinking on your feet.

What you’ll learn: active listening, sharper language skills and how to give concise feedback.

Table Topics Speakers

Table Topics Speakers deliver short, impromptu speeches on topics set by the TTM. It’s a low-pressure way to practise thinking on your feet in a supportive setting, and you can volunteer on the night, with no booking needed.

What you’ll learn: composure, structuring ideas quickly and speaking with confidence without preparation.

Sergeant at Arms (SAA)

The SAA looks after the logistics of the meeting: setting up the space, managing materials, checking equipment works and welcoming and registering attendees. They also help the meeting run smoothly.

What you’ll learn: organisation, teamwork and how to make a great first impression on guests.

Prepared Speech Evaluators

Evaluators give structured feedback on prepared speeches, highlighting strengths and areas for growth against the speech objectives.
